GOOD GOD what has happened to me? I spend a good portion of free time MAKING ICONS. Perhaps I should get a life... Maybe go out tomorrow or something if Bettina is available... Ehhh...

Okay, guys. This is my first attempt at fanfiction. Actually, it's my first attempt at fiction period. I've only ever written essays and reports for school until now. I'm sure that this isn't the best story around, but keep in mind that it's my first. Please only make fun of me behind my back, okay? Okay!

Title: An Unlikely Mother
Pairing: None so far - maybe Bellatrix/Narcissa friendship
Rating: PG
Spoilers: Not sure, really. I don't think so as this is set before any of the books.
Summary: Bellatrix comes home for summer holiday, finding herself in less than desirable circumstances.
Warning: None
Disclaimer: I don't own Harry Potter or anything about it.

It was summer and the Black sisters were coming home for their holiday from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Andromeda and Cissy didn’t seem to mind being away, but Bellatrix sorely missed her Slytherin friends, not to mention all of the merciless teasing they subjected the muggle-borns to. Her parents, Druella and Cygnus, hardly thought that it was a crime, but rather a phase the two of them expected all three of the Black girls to go through. Toujours pur, as they always said. It meant “Always pure” and with a family motto like that it would have been a shock if any of the Blacks didn’t tease muggle-borns.

It wasn’t just her friends’ absence that had Bella looking pale and feeling under the weather, though. There was something wrong that she couldn’t quite put her finger on that had her sitting crumpled on the marble floor of the upstairs bathroom. Every once in a while she straightened into a kneeling position just so she could retch and vomit into the porcelain toilet. It was hardly becoming of a cultured girl such as herself, but try as she might she just couldn’t fight it.

Once she was certain that it was over (at least temporarily) Bellatrix slowly, awkwardly got to her feet. She ran cold water from the shiny bronze spigot, cupping some in her hands to rinse the awful taste of stomach bile from her mouth. She splashed just a bit of the water onto her face to pull herself out of what she thought was merely a sort of mental funk. After a quick glance at herself in the mirror, Bella made her exit and walked into her bedroom.

She found Narcissa seated on her comfortable armchair, her feet tucked beneath her with her arms wrapped around her knees. Bella put her hands to her hips, feigning annoyance with her sister’s presence, but couldn’t even pull a convincing expression. Cissy’s face - the face of an angel, some said - made it impossible for Bella to be angry with her for invading her bedroom.

“What’s wrong, Bella?” Narcissa cocked her head to the side curiously, inquiring in a voice that sounded much more innocent than Cissy could ever hope to be. The concern showing on her face, though, was completely true. In response to her sister’s honest care, the corners of Bellatrix’s mouth pulled up and outward just slightly to form a very faint smile. If it hadn’t been such a contrast to the stone-faced expression Bellatrix wore on the train home nobody could have told the difference.

“Just sick.” She answered sharply as if to shrug off Narcissa’s worry. “Why are you in my room?” Bella asked as she took a seat on the edge of her soft, downy mattress. Cissy only shrugged, neglecting to voice her worry about the changes she’d seen in her older sister’s behavior over the past few weeks. That was the real reason she’d come to spend a bit of time with Bella, but she chose not to say a word about it.

Bellatrix sighed, kicking her fashionable shoes off of her feet leaving them clad only with silky black stockings. She never lied on her bed with her shoes still on. She’d been scolded too many times for soiling her bed’s comforter with the soles of her shoes. Kicking them off had become habit. Besides, she was more comfortable lying down that way.

“Three months of summer, mmm? Lots of fun…” She plopped down, resting her head on the fluffiest pillow money could buy, and tilted her head so that she could look Narcissa in the eyes. Cissy nodded, biting her bottom lip just a bit. Her lack of verbal response indicated to Bella that something was up. “Cissy, say something will you? This silence is positively driving me up a wall.”

Narcissa smiled playfully, giggling just a little bit for a moment before clamping her hand over her mouth to prevent any more laughter from escaping. Bellatrix couldn’t help but smile a little herself at her younger sister’s reaction. Finally, after a few seconds’ pause, Narcissa spoke in a soft but almost mischievous voice.

“Perhaps you’re pregnant.” She giggled more once the words escaped her lips, shaking her own head at the unlikely notion.

“Cissy!” Bellatrix protested in a loud voice, sitting upright so quickly that it almost gave her a head rush. She joined her sister in laughter, thinking all of it to be quite silly.
Bella wasn’t a virgin, but she was far from being what others might consider to be promiscuous. It wasn’t because of morals or because she wanted to wait for the right one, but rather because her standards were ridiculously high and not many students at Hogwarts fit those standards. Even though she did find herself bedding a fellow student every once in a while she faithfully chugged contraceptus potion before getting physical with anyone. Pregnancy just didn’t happen when one took those measures - not to girls like Bella - not like girls who came from families like the Blacks… It just didn’t happen.

Both sisters were smiling, but the silence between the two of them just grew and grew. It was quite awkward and both tried to summon the drive to speak but both also failed.

Bellatrix plopped back on her mattress, staring up at the ceiling and Narcissa silently rocked back and forth in her seat. Silence allowed the mind to create thoughts and inner monologue and that made Bellatrix’s mind the loudest in the room.

Her mind was filled with worry. Just minutes ago she was convinced that the thought of her being pregnant was absolutely ridiculous. She’d even laughed at it. Now she was worried that she’d made a mistake. Had she taken the contraceptus potion before every tryst? She made decent grades in NEWT level Potions class, but had she brewed said potion incorrectly?

Bella shot up into a seated position on her bed. There was only one thing that would put an end to the worries.

“Cissy?” She called her sister’s name in a soft, sweet voice. Narcissa recognized it right away as the voice Bella always used when she wanted something of someone.

“Hmm?” She looked up at her sister, brushing a stray strand of blonde hair from her face.

“You know about muggle money, don’t you?” Bella smiled, but Narcissa scowled. She did indeed know all about the muggle monetary system, but she was a sensitive girl and easily offended. To know mostly anything about muggles was considered an insult.

“Yes,” Narcissa sighed. “I do.”

In spite of the circumstances, the corners of Bella’s mouth raised slightly to form a smile. The expression lit up her face and it lightened up Narcissa’s mood just slightly. All three of the Black sisters had beauty that increased by a mile when they smiled. One might call it

“Well, then,” Bella swung her legs so that they hung off of the side of the bed. “Let’s go on an adventure, then, shall we?”

Wearing muggle clothing, Bellatrix and Narcissa fit into the crowd nicely. Both of them would certainly rather have been wearing elegant dresses paired up with equally elegant robes, but to any passing muggle they looked absolutely beautiful dressed the way they were.

Bella’s high heeled ankle boots made a sort of rhythmic clacking on the pharmacy’s cheap and dirty-looking linoleum floor, but even that noise couldn’t tear the pharmacist’s attention away from the pills he was counting. Narcissa huffed quietly to herself, disgusted that the man behind the counter didn’t acknowledge their presence right away. Bella coughed, expecting him to look up right away, but he didn’t.

“Excuse me,” She gritted her teeth together for a moment, then plastering a fake smile onto her face. The pharmacist pushed one last pill into the orange plastic bottle and then finally looked up at the two girls with an odd sort of grin.

“Well, hello!” He exclaimed. He’d been all by himself all day and was thrilled to finally be face-to-face with other human beings. Bella and Cissy were less than thrilled.

“Hello,” Bella spoke curtly, making her smile seem all the more phony. “I was wondering where-- Well, what I mean is--” And somehow her usually articulate speech became jumbled and confused. She knew exactly what she wanted to ask the pharmacist, but just couldn’t bring herself to speak the words.

“Where are the pregnancy tests, hmm?” Narcissa blurted out the question, meaning it as a favor for her sister, but instead of thanks she received a vicious glare. Bella turned back to look the pharmacist in the eyes and nodded to indicate that that was indeed what she wanted to know.

“One of you in trouble, eh?” He joked and started chuckling softly to himself. The pharmacist’s smile took a turn towards goofy, but the two Black sisters standing before him didn’t even crack the smallest of smiles.

“Are you naturally improperly inquisitive or do you simply try your hardest to look like a fool asking stupid questions?” Bella spat out the words nastily, nearly slurring all of them together as they came out of her mouth so quickly. Cissy smiled just slightly with that natural sadism, enjoying her sister put the man on the spot and look stupid. Bellatrix just looked angry.

“We’ll find it.” Her eyes narrowed into slits and she roughly grabbed Narcissa by the hand and looked up and down the various aisles. She didn’t pay attention to the signs hanging above which said things like ‘toiletries’ or ‘vitamins and supplements’. All she did was walk up one and down another until she found what she was looking for. Bella snatched up one pregnancy test and then another until she was struggling to cradle five boxes in her arms. She had to let go of Cissy’s hand to hold the things.

Both sisters made their way back to the counter where the pharmacist stood, looking quite antsy at the sight of them again.

Bella dumped the load of boxes onto the counter without saying a word. She didn’t really care to speak to the pharmacist any more than she already had. She then elbowed Narcissa gently, her cue to pay for the things with muggle money as only Cissy knew how to do.

“Thirty even.” The man spoke in a soft, cautious voice as Cissy dug through her leather wallet, withdrawing the proper amount of cash. She slid the money towards the man. He couldn’t help but think it odd that the younger sibling would be paying, but he said nothing. Frankly, the two of them made him quite nervous.

“Both of you have a lovely day,” He smiled meekly, shoved the boxes into a plastic bag and handed it to Bella. She snatched it out of his hand in an almost predatorily way, fighting the urge to roll her eyes at the man’s parting words. She merely sighed an almost completely inaudible ‘whatever’ and exited the pharmacy with her sister.

“This can’t be right!” Bellatrix nearly choked on a sob, tears running down her pale cheeks. She had locked herself in the upstairs bathroom, trying to keep the volume of her voice quiet so that no one in the house would know what was going on. Cissy, though, sat just outside of the bathroom, pressing her ear up against the wooden door.

“It isn’t that bad, Bella.” Cissy spoke in a quiet, hesitant voice.

“But it is!” Bella sniffled loudly as she protested. “It’s horrible - positively horrible, Cissy.”

Bella uttered a few words and with a flick of her wand she used magic to destroy all evidence that she ever had pregnancy tests in her possession. She wasn’t worried that the insignificant spell would be noticed by the Ministry. No one would ever do anything against the Blacks. People knew better.

Bellatrix sighed, splashing a bit of cold water onto her face. She nearly knocked Narcissa over as she opened the bathroom door with haste.

“There are things that can be done.” She nodded, talking to herself more than to Narcissa. “It could disappear before anyone even knows that it ever existed.”

“Bella!” Narcissa shouted, looking absolutely horrified at her sisters words. Was her sister really suggesting that she was going to terminate the pregnancy?

“Well, what would you do, Narcissa?” Bella’s expression was a mixed one, both despairing and angered. “People of our status in society don’t get into situations like this. Your ideals and the thought of me carrying out this- this thing to fruition just don’t fit in a world like ours.” She sighed, tears welling up in her eyes.

Cissy sniffled softly, feeling like crying herself, but she suppressed the tears as she wanted to be the strong one for once. She got up, standing on her tip-toes and throwing her arms around her sister’s neck.

“Oh, Bella,” She stroked her sister’s beautiful black hair, hugging her body close to her own. “We’ll get through this. I’ll help you.”

The two stood there for a very long time. It took the rough voice of a house elf to pull them out of the bleak haze they were in. They smiled just slightly at each other. Somehow Bella knew that her sister wouldn’t rat on her about the whole ordeal - that she had found an ally in her youngest sibling. It was comforting in spite of the test results and it almost made her stop her worrying. She would find a way to get through everything.

I haven't slept at all. I've gotten to the point where I'm just like "fuck it" but I don't want coffee and nodoz! I want SLEEP! I finished Harry Potter and the Goblet of fire and previous to this night/morning I was only halfway through. I watched The Hills Have Eyes 2. Bad movie, but anyway...
I... painted my nails maroon. They were previously black.
It's no uuuuuuse... I just lay there for an hour and sleep just doesn't come. I tried AMBIEN. I tried TWO ambien. I tried CHAMOMILE TEA.

Sorry for the caps, people, I'm just really frustrated.

I'm fizzling out right now, but I know if I go to bed I'll just kind of lay there thinking stuff like "I wonder what I'll do today. Maybe I should go to the gym with Bettina. No, Bettina's away with her family for a get-together. Maybe I'll eat an entire bag of nachos."

I realize that my sense of humor is down to a sub par level because of this insomnia. So just laugh to make me feel better.

I don't think that cmwinters is a dick anymore. She apologized out in the open after someone else stood up for me and supported my claim that my icons aren't someone else's work. I respect that she apologized and didn't just shrink off into the darkness. That's a cool quality to have.

I went out to lunch with dad today. We went to Stir Crazy (a chinese make-your-own stir fry restaurant) and had fun. The waitress asked him for his name and he said, very plainly, "Stanley" and he smiled really wide. His name, for those of you who don't know, is Bill. So she bought it but after she left us to make our own stir fry lunches we both burst into little giggles.

So tonight Barnes & Noble is having a 'Midnight Magic' party celebrating the release of the final Harry Potter book. I'm not going. I went one year and everyone was in robes and shit with their 'house' logo on their clothing and some even had ties resembling Harry Potter characters' ties. And wands. Jesus, the wands. If I were to go I think I'd dress up like HBC's Bellatrix and tease my hair so I looked like I'd spent yeeeears in Azkaban. And then I'd just point at random people and shout CRUCIO and look surprised when nothing happened to them. Who knows? I might throw in an 'AVADA KEDAVRA' to spice things up.

I do need to go out, though. Bettina's fresh out of the hospital and feeling like a hermit so she doesn't want to do anything. I asked. She said no.

Alright, so... There's this guy in a folding chair on the side of one of the main roads and he has a sombrero on his head. He's shouting into this megaphone about the new Mexican restaurant. He's been doing this for days. I sure hope he gets paid well. Last I saw him he'd set the megaphone down and was reading a book which I thought was comical. Seriously folks. A sombrero.

You know what I think (re: Harry Potter)? I think JKR should write an entire book about all of the more famous death eaters. But I'm a little obsessed at the moment.

I'm spending the night at my parents' place because I had a scary hallucination and I just want to be near them. It was ants again. It's always ants - seeing a swarming dark mass crawling all over me. I feel them tickle my skin and they smell like compost. It's disgusting and scary. I thought that this sort of thing had past but my mom, who meant to comfort me, said that this is a chronic illness and that I will probably be dealing with it for all my life.

Fuck.

Other than that, things are peachy. I plan on doing something tomorrow with Bettina. Don't know what exactly, but she said she'd think of something.

It's amazing how my parents have re-done my room...
